Winter cycling jackets are an essential part of any cyclist’s wardrobe. If you want to maintain reasonable riding distances in all weathers you need to stay warm and dry. In this article, we pick out our favourite jackets and explain the features you should look for when shopping.
The jackets that we are looking at are suitable for road cyclists who are looking for maximum weather protection. Touring, training, commuting or long endurance rides demand a level of comfort. We do not recommend these jackets for racing when you will likely want to remain as sleek as a racing snake.
Best winter cycling jacket – Staying dry
There are a number of important factors to consider when shopping for a winter jacket. First and foremost, you want to stay dry. Of course rain and sleet are potential sources of water, however, there is another issue; sweat. When riding we create heat and moisture and in the summer this is not really an issue. In winter, the sweat that forms on our skin can cool rapidly with wind chill, or soak our base layer.
A high-quality winter cycling jacket will not only keep moisture out but will also draw moisture away from our base layer. This process is called “wicking” and good manufacturers use hi-tech materials to achieve a comfortable environment inside the jacket.
Venting systems are also advised, particularly those that can be opened and closed to adjust airflow. We have all been on rides where the sun is in and out of heavy clouds. One minute it is overcast and freezing cold and the next we are struggling with zips to cool down. Quality venting systems allow us to regulate temperature according to the elements and riding style.
Features to look for:
- Hi-tech wicking layer
- Durable Hi- tech outer shell
- Airflow mesh or zip systems to alter airflow
Best winter cycling jacket – Maneuverability (H2)
On long rides, we like to be able to move around easily. Reaching for a bidon, a snack, or shifting positions to climb or descend, all require uninhibited movement. For a winter jacket to do its job properly, it should be flexible enough to allow freedom of movement while remaining tough enough to withstand the elements.
In the dead of winter when cold and wet is guaranteed a quality winter jacket over a standard cycling can work better than multiple layers. The issue with layers is that you can spend a lot of time compromised. No one wants to keep stopping to put another layer on, or take the last one off. The right jacket over a standard cycling jersey will cope with all situations.
Features to look for:
- Multiple panels
- Hi-tech stretchable materials
- Lightweight durable materials
Best winter cycling jacket – Storage (H2)
Once we cover up our favourite cycling jersey we are also losing the integral storage pocket. At least, we are losing easy access to them. Modern winter cycling jackets use various storage systems to make sure your pump, snacks, tubes and multi-tools are all in easy reach. If you like to ride with a phone about your person, then many will have weatherproof pockets for expensive devices.
Features to look for:
- Easy accessible pockets
- Dedicated pockets for tech
- Easy to use zips for gloved hands
As budgets get lower, some savings have to be made and sub £200 winter jackets may have less technical materials, zips and other components are of lower quality and stitching can be less robust than the premium gear. Expect a budget winter cycling jacket to be replaced more regularly depending on your level of use.
Finally, we all want to look the part. The very best road cycling winter jackets ooze style.
With these tips in mind, here are our top five favourites.
